A Scottish First: Estate-Level Land Management Wins Highest Gold Standard

Renowned whisky brand The Macallan recently announced that its 485-acre distillery estate in Scotland has officially received Wildlife Estates Scotland (WES) certification, making it the first distillery in all of Scotland to achieve this distinction. This certification is regarded as the highest gold standard in comprehensive land management, specifically honoring landowners who fully implement biodiversity, ecological conservation, and best practices in their daily operations.

During the evaluation, The Macallan Estate achieved the second-highest score for a first-time applicant in the certification's history. Beyond the distillery, warehouses, and office facilities, large areas of the estate are meticulously planned and managed, creating well-established wildlife corridors through the maintenance of native woodlands, newly planted trees, and hedgerows. Furthermore, by restoring and reshaping the Burn of Ringorm watercourse and removing historical waterwheel structures, the estate has not only successfully restored fish migration pathways but also delivered significant ecological benefits.

Implementing Regenerative Agriculture to Protect the Precious Ecosystem of the River Spey

The River Spey, which flows through the estate, fosters a rich wetland habitat and precious species, providing thorough protection for wild Atlantic salmon, freshwater pearl mussels, otters, and lampreys. To repair the impact of past intensive agriculture on the soil, the estate has comprehensively implemented regenerative agriculture, adopting practices such as cover crops, reduced tillage, lower pesticide use, the restoration of field boundaries, and the establishment of natural wildflower margins to comprehensively enhance soil health.

This estate-level management model, combining natural ecology, is concretely implemented in The Macallan's currently active five-year ecosystem restoration plan.
