The Macallan Launches Carta Nautica 38YO & 20YO

Inspired by Transatlantic Cask Journeys: Reversed-Maturation Dual Releases Unveiled

Renowned Scottish distillery The Macallan has announced the launch of its new single malt whisky range, the Carta Nautica Collection. Inspired by the transatlantic journey of oak, craftsmanship, and time, the collection debuts with two expressions: a limited-release 1987 vintage single malt and a Global Travel Retail-exclusive 20-year-old single malt.

Oak Craftsmanship Reversing the Traditional Maturation Path

Taking its name from the Spanish word for "nautical chart", the collection traces the transatlantic voyage of staves and casks—from North America to Jerez de la Frontera in Spain, onwards to Scotland, and ultimately to The Macallan Estate along the River Spey. The Macallan whisky team adopted an inverted maturation sequence for this range: the spirit was first double-matured in bespoke sherry-seasoned oak casks from Jerez de la Frontera, then transferred into casks previously holding North American bourbon, before completing its aging at the distillery estate.

1987 Vintage 38YO & 20YO Tasting Notes and Release Details

The inaugural vintage release, Distilled in 1987, has matured for over 38 years and is bottled at 45.2% ABV. Official tasting notes reveal aromas of creamy vanilla and caramelized peach alongside aged oak, giving way to layers of nectarine, grilled pineapple, and supple leather on the palate. The 20-year-old expression, created exclusively for Global Travel Retail, is bottled at 42% ABV and leads with lively orange peel and creamy vanilla, accompanied by notes of charred pineapple and juicy mango.

Lead Whisky Maker Euan Kennedy noted that the Carta Nautica Collection pays homage to journey and transformation, bringing together casks shaped by different continents and climates to establish both contrast and harmony. Creative Director Jaume Ferras also shared that the series showcases the extraordinary voyage and master craftsmanship behind the whisky.

Both packaging presentations feature paper art created by American artist Amy Genser, inspired by the movement of water. The 1987 vintage is available starting September 28 at The Macallan Estate Boutique and select global boutiques. The 20-year-old debuted on September 28 exclusively at Lotte Duty Free in Singapore Changi Airport, with rollouts to airport boutiques worldwide beginning October 19.
