Starward Founder Re-acquires Brand: Diageo Exits

David Vitale Back at the Helm: Starward Returns to Independent Ownership

Australian whisky brand Starward Whisky has undergone a major management change, as founder David Vitale announced the completion of a full acquisition, bringing the brand back under a founder-led business model. This acquisition marks the official conclusion of a nine-year partnership between global spirits giant Diageo and Starward Whisky. Since 2015, Diageo held a minority stake in Starward Whisky through its accelerator program, Distill Ventures, supporting the development of this Australian distillery.

In a poignant press release, David Vitale shared that it has been over a decade since he last had full leadership over Starward Whisky. He noted that through the hard work of a professional team, the brand has built a solid foundation. He believes this is a rare opportunity to further expand the brand's advantages within the rapidly growing whisky category.

Vitale emphasized his confidence in the future and looks forward to leading the team toward new heights and creating even more glorious years for the brand.

Renowned for Red Wine Cask Maturation

Founded in 2007 in Melbourne, Starward Whisky is world-renowned for its unique maturation process. The distillery primarily uses local Australian red wine barrels to age its Single Malt Whisky, a distinct local characteristic that has allowed it to stand out in the global whisky market.

Conclusion of the Distill Ventures Program

This change follows Diageo's announcement in March 2025 that it would withdraw funding from Distill Ventures, signaling the end of the accelerator program. Established in 2013, Distill Ventures aimed to assist the growth of promising startup brands, with Starward Whisky being one of its most prominent members. As the program ends, its portfolio brands are seeking new ownership structures.

In addition to Starward Whisky, the Distill Ventures portfolio includes well-known brands such as America's Westward, Denmark's Stauning, Japan's Kanosuke Distillery, and the UK's Fielden Whisky. For Starward Whisky, David Vitale's return not only ensures the brand's continuity but also marks its entry into the next phase of growth.
