Macallan Speymalt by G&M: Aged up to 68 Years
Gordon & MacPhail's Half-Century History of Speyside Maturation
The renowned Speyside single malt distillery Macallan was founded in 1824. Throughout Scotch whisky history, some of the most sought-after Macallan releases were not bottled by the distillery itself, but rather by independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail under their celebrated Speymalt range.

Based in Elgin, Gordon & MacPhail was established in 1895 as a grocery and spirits merchant, purchasing new-make spirit from various Scottish distilleries to mature in specially selected casks. Well before the Speymalt name was coined, the firm released bottlings during the 1960s and 1970s under the Macallan-Glenlivet moniker, featuring whiskies distilled in the 1930s and 1940s aged 25, 30, 35, and even 40 years, exported to markets such as Italy. As the distillery increasingly built its own brand identity, independent bottlers had fewer opportunities to acquire its new-make spirit, making the subsequent "Speymalt from Macallan Distillery" an iconic collection.
Historic Single Cask Records and Iconic Vintages
The Speymalt series meticulously records the heritage of each expression, stating the distillation year, bottling year, age statement, and cask number on the label. The lineup includes extraordinary ultra-aged bottlings, such as Macallan 1940 50 Year Old Speymalt—distilled on January 1, 1940, matured for 30 years at the distillery in casks 3, 5, and 7, aged another 20 years in Elgin warehouses, and bottled in the early 1990s. Another legendary release is the 1945 vintage, distilled on April 12, 1945, aged in casks 106 and 109 before transfer to Elgin bonded warehouses in 1978 and 1980, and finally bottled on August 15, 2013, at 68 years of age.

Additionally, the series encompasses legendary vintages from the 1960s and 1970s: a 1965 vintage matured in sherry wood for nearly 50 years and bottled in 2012; a 1966 vintage aged around 32 years with deep sherry profile bottled in 1998; a 1967 vintage aged 49 years in first-fill sherry casks bottled in 2016; along with a 1973 vintage aged 33 years bottled in 2006, and a 1978 vintage aged 20 years bottled in 1998.
Modern Single Cask Releases
The Speymalt series does not restrict itself to mid-century gems, also releasing modern expressions. For instance, the Macallan 2002 Speymalt – Cask 1178 was distilled in 2002 and bottled in 2021 at 19 years old from single cask #1178 at a natural cask strength of 57.3% ABV, limited to only 248 bottles. Spanning multiple decades, these bottlings thoroughly chronicle the evolution of this Speyside distillery's spirit profile under independent maturation expertise.
