Gordon & MacPhail unveils final chapter of Mr George Legacy Series—a 70-year-old single malt whisky
Gordon & MacPhail has unveiled the fifth and final whisky in the Mr George Legacy Series—an extraordinarily rare 70-year-old single malt, paying tribute to Mr George Urquhart, celebrated as the father of single malt whisky, and his relentless quest for perfection.
Named Mr George Legacy Series 1954, this whisky hails from Glen Grant Distillery, with only 130 bottles released globally, coinciding with Gordon & MacPhail's 130th anniversary. Reflecting Mr George's fondness for Glen Grant Distillery, this release continues the style of the series' previous four expressions. Distilled on April 24, 1954, it was aged for 70 years in first-fill sherry cask No. 1823.
Bottled at 50.5% ABV, the whisky offers rich fruity aromas with notes of vanilla fudge and coffee, delivering a smooth palate of red apple, walnut, dried orange peel, dark chocolate, and toasted oak. The packaging design draws inspiration from Mr George's pursuit of perfection and his exploration of the interplay between spirit, cask, and time.
Mr George, a second-generation member of the Gordon & MacPhail family, played a pivotal role in promoting and developing single malt whisky. In the late 1960s, he launched the Connoisseurs Choice series, which has since featured over 2,000 whiskies from nearly 100 distilleries.
Stuart Urquhart, Operations Director at Gordon & MacPhail, stated that this final release is a fitting tribute to his grandfather's life work and an inspiration for future generations to carry forward Mr George's innovative spirit. Whisky expert Charlie MacLean praised the whisky as vibrant and complex, calling it a perfect memorial to Mr George.
All five whiskies in the Mr George Legacy Series originate from Glen Grant Distillery, each with a distinct flavor profile. The series not only honors Mr George but also showcases Gordon & MacPhail's mastery in whisky craftsmanship.
