Diageo 單一麥芽威士忌 2026 年 The Twelve 選入 1978 年 Talisker | How Diageo Finds 12 Exceptional Whiskies Among More Than 10 Million Casks

Diageo 2026 The Twelve Unveils 1978 Talisker Cask

Casks of Distinction Selects 12 Rare Single Casks Spanning Half a Century of Aging and PX Finishing

Diageo has announced the 2026 edition of The Twelve, an annual curated single malt Scotch whisky release under its prestigious bespoke cask program, Casks of Distinction. The blending team devotes over 4,200 hours annually to evaluating casks, meticulously handpicking 12 exceptional casks boasting diverse heritage and flavour profiles from an inventory of over 10 million maturing casks. This year's lineup spans distillations from the 1970s to the early 1990s, including well-aged stocks from distilleries such as Caol Ila and Glen Ord.

Key Featured Casks and Specifications

Leading this year's collection is an Islay standout: the Lagavulin 1991 single cask (Cask #1069), representing the oldest Lagavulin ever released through the program. Initially matured in a refill oak cask, it underwent a secondary maturation of nearly two decades in a PX-seasoned American oak hogshead, yielding an estimated 125 bottles at 57.6% ABV. Another ultra-aged highlight is the Talisker 1978 single cask (Cask #2824), matured for nearly half a century in a refill American oak cask, yielding 131 bottles at 49.9% ABV. Additionally, a Linkwood 1993 single cask (Cask #13) was transferred in 2006 to a re-charred American oak cask for about 20 years, bottled at 50.4% ABV with an expected yield of around 180 bottles, while a Blair Athol 1997 single cask (Cask #1491) matured entirely in a first-fill European oak Sherry hogshead at 57.1% ABV.

Flavor Profiles and Sensory Evolution

Each selected cask demonstrates distinct sensory development. The Talisker 1978 opens with restrained notes of cream, vanilla pudding, sabayon, and American cream soda, before gently revealing underlying smoke and the distillery's signature black pepper in the glass. The Lagavulin 1991 harmoniously fuses maritime peat smoke with rich dark dried fruit, licorice, and toasted oak imparted by the PX seasoning. Blair Athol 1997 showcases dense layers of dark fruit, tannins, and spices, which open up with greater clarity upon dilution with water.

Maturation Definitions and Sensory Evaluation

At a tasting hosted at the Royal Lochnagar distillery, Dr. Greg Wilson shared that colleague Dr. Stuart Morrison regarded this Lagavulin cask as one of the finest he had ever encountered. Morrison observed that the PX cask finishing imparted astonishing depth without obscuring the distillery's native spirit character. Addressing secondary cask maturation, Diageo representatives explained that they refer to such expressions as 'select cask' rather than 'single cask' to maintain transparency regarding maturation history.

To oversee its immense reserves, Diageo tracks fill dates and cask specifications via digital inventory systems, utilizing GC and HPLC analyses to study chemical compounds. However, the human sensory expertise and memory passed down by master blenders such as Maureen Robinson and Jim Beveridge remain the core of the final selection. The team stresses that while scientific analytics verify quality, human nosing is the sole benchmark determining true distinction—an irreplaceable human artistry at the heart of The Twelve series.
