Recreating a Century-Old Legend: Buffalo Trace Launches Prohibition Collection Third Edition

Renowned American distillery Buffalo Trace Distillery has announced the release of the highly anticipated third edition of its Prohibition Collection. This annual limited-edition series comprises five unique bottlings designed to commemorate the legendary whiskies legally produced and sold by the distillery during the enforcement of the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. These historic expressions bear witness to the most turbulent and challenging era in American whiskey history.

During the Prohibition years from 1920 to 1933, the production, sale, and transportation of alcohol were entirely banned in the United States. While the vast majority of distilleries were forced to close, only six were granted special permits by the U.S. government to legally bottle and sell medicinal whiskey via prescriptions. Buffalo Trace Distillery, known at the time as the George T. Stagg Distillery, was one of them.

Reviving Nearly Forgotten Historical Brands and Packaging

The newly released third edition utilizes historical documents preserved in the distillery's archives to rediscover and recreate five nearly forgotten historical brands: Henry Watterson, Kentucky River, John G. Carlisle, Walter B. Duffy, and Cove Spring. The naming and packaging design of each whiskey pay homage to the original editions, vividly restoring the century-old brand stories and distilling craftsmanship.

Buffalo Trace Distillery Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley noted that the launch of this series allows the distillery to revive crucial chapters nearly lost to history. By reinterpreting these historic whiskies, the distillery not only honors the predecessors who demonstrated resilience and wisdom back then, but also continues its deep-rooted distilling heritage. This collection features a custom wooden box packaging complete with a replica prescription-style tear-off design used by doctors of the era, perfectly recreating the original historical appearance.
