Buffalo Trace Distillery has announced the release of the Elmer T. Lee 40th Anniversary Edition, marking the first time Elmer T. Lee Single Barrel Bourbon has been bottled uncut and unfiltered. Unveiled to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the original Elmer T. Lee Bourbon, this limited-edition bourbon pays tribute to the late Master Distiller's profound legacy at the distillery. Kentucky-based Buffalo Trace Bourbon has always upheld tradition, and this release allows enthusiasts to experience the pure, unadulterated character straight from the barrel.

Natural Barrel Proof and Official Tasting Profile

This 40th Anniversary Edition bourbon was drawn directly from barrels without water dilution or chill filtration. The distillery team selected barrels rich in flavor and distinct individuality, with each barrel bottled at its natural cask strength, ranging from 124.8 to 138.6 proof.

According to official tasting notes, the aroma presents layers of dried apricot, almond, vanilla, toasted coconut, and honeysuckle. The palate is chewy and full-bodied, carrying a sweet touch reminiscent of crème brûlée, leading into a long finish marked by toasted oak and baking spices. This uncut presentation also mirrors how Elmer T. Lee originally evaluated liquid when selecting barrels for Blanton's, giving whiskey lovers a sensory glimpse into the distiller's discerning palate.

Distilling Heritage and Historical Background

Erica Bovard, Senior Brand Director for American Whiskey, noted that releasing this expression uncut and unfiltered highlights the depth and character of the whiskey while honoring the benchmark Elmer established, creating a bourbon that fans will love and Elmer would be proud of. Current Buffalo Trace Distillery Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley also shared that Elmer's legacy continues to be felt and celebrated every day at the distillery. Having been fortunate to learn from Elmer early in his career, Wheatley stated that Elmer's guidance in crafting bourbon and work ethic continues to inspire his craft today.

Elmer T. Lee served in World War II and graduated from the University of Kentucky before joining the historic George T. Stagg Distillery in 1949 as a maintenance engineer, eventually rising to Master Distiller. In 1984, he pioneered the industry by introducing Blanton's Single Barrel Bourbon, the world's first single barrel bourbon. In 1986, the distillery honored him with the release of Elmer T. Lee Single Barrel Bourbon, cementing his name as an icon of American whiskey.
