Details of Six Ultra-Aged Expressions Revealed as Officials Address Kentucky Barrel Evaporation and Anti-Counterfeiting Guidance
The Van Winkle family and Buffalo Trace Distillery have officially announced the release of the 2026 Van Winkle bourbon whiskey collection. This unveiled collection comprises six expressions of varying age statements, featuring extensively aged bourbon and rye whiskies, maturing up to 23 years.
The 2026 lineup features six expressions: Old Rip Van Winkle 10-Year-Old, Van Winkle Special Reserve 12-Year-Old, Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye 13-Year-Old, alongside three Family Reserve bourbon offerings—Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve 15-Year-Old, Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve 20-Year-Old, and Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve 23-Year-Old. In compliance with bourbon legal regulations, the spirit must be aged in brand new charred oak barrels.

Kentucky Climate and Evaporative Loss Across Decades of Maturation
High-age-statement bourbon must endure extensive time in the wood. For this year's 23-year-old release, the spirit in the casks was filled in 2003 or earlier. Buffalo Trace Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley previously noted that a 53-gallon barrel of wheated bourbon yields only about 14 gallons of liquid after 23 years of natural evaporation. Preston Van Winkle, Vice President of Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery, emphasized that when it comes to whiskey aged for this many years, there are no shortcuts to time and the maturation process.
Unlike Scotland's cool maturation conditions, the hot warehouse climate of Kentucky accelerates the interaction between the liquid and the oak barrel interior, causing barrels to lose liquid to evaporation at a significantly faster rate. This makes bourbon aged 20 years or more exceptionally rare across the entire industry.

Official Warning Issued on Secondary Market Counterfeiting and Fraud
Concurrently, the Van Winkle family issued an anti-counterfeit advisory to consumers in the announcement. The family noted that unauthorized secondary marketplaces and online sellers carry severe risks of fake bottles, scams, and counterfeit products. Consumers should exercise extreme caution if sellers demand payments via wire transfer or cryptocurrency. If suspected of purchasing a fraudulent bottle, the family advises consumers not to consume it, to report the case to the Better Business Bureau and their state Attorney General's office, and to reach out to credit card providers for fraud protection.
