Paris Hits 41°C: Temporary Public Drinking Ban Imposed

Extreme Climate Impact: French Authorities Issue Emergency Public Drinking Ban

As an extreme heatwave sweeps across Europe, the French capital, Paris, has announced a temporary ban on alcohol consumption in public spaces this weekend. The Paris Prefecture of Police (Préfecture de Police) has officially issued a decree prohibiting the consumption of alcoholic beverages on public land and suspending the takeaway sale of alcohol products. This measure comes as Paris experiences severe heat, with temperatures soaring to 41°C in some areas, and the meteorological agency Météo-France issuing the highest-level red heatwave warning for the region.

Escalated Mobilization: Easing the Burden on Medical and Fire Services

This measure aligns with Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu's activation of the highest-level medical system mobilization mechanism, ORSAN Level 3. Authorities noted that emergency medical services are under excessive pressure, with Paris fire brigades and hospital emergency departments seeing a surge in patient volume. The fire department is facing logistical emergencies, particularly a lack of ice and cooling equipment to treat heatstroke victims. Medical institutions emphasize that alcohol accelerates dehydration and impairs the body's thermoregulatory functions, advising total avoidance of alcohol during heatwaves to reduce health risks like heatstroke.

The ban targets "Category 3 to 5" alcoholic beverages, covering Spirits, Liqueurs, as well as Beer, Cider, and Wine. The ban will be enforced in shifts, including from noon on the 26th to early morning on the 27th, and from noon on the 27th to early morning on the 28th. This regulation does not apply to on-trade channels, meaning restaurants and bars in Paris can still legally serve alcohol.

Previously, during last weekend's Fête de la Musique, the local government also implemented similar restrictions aimed at alleviating the burden on the medical system caused by extreme weather. Authorities once again urge the public to stay hydrated and closely monitor their health during the intense heat.
