Innovative Double-Cask Process: Blending Tradition with Science
At the heart of this whiskey is its uniquely innovative secondary finishing process. After completing its initial maturation, the spirit is transferred to a second custom oak barrel that has been specifically toasted but left uncharred. The wood chosen for these barrels must be naturally air-dried and aged outdoors for up to twenty-four months before being toasted to extremely precise specifications. Michter’s President Joseph J. Magliocco noted that this pioneering technique stems from the distillery's R&D over a decade ago, allowing the team to uphold Kentucky's long-standing distillation traditions while continually incorporating scientific research and breakthrough innovations, thereby establishing a brand-new category for toasted barrel whiskeys.
This year's release was crafted under the leadership of Master Distiller Dan McKee and Master of Maturation Andrea Wilson. Dan McKee emphasized that creating the Toasted Barrel series requires immense dedication and meticulous attention to detail; only by perfectly pairing fully matured whiskey with oak barrels of a specific toast level can an impeccable flavor balance be achieved, serving as a prime example of the distillery's fusion of art and science.
Multi-Layered Tasting Experience and Barrel Strength
Describing the multi-layered tasting experience, Andrea Wilson detailed how the whiskey opens with deep, rich, sweet-and-salty dimensions on the palate, delivering a warm and comforting richness. This gracefully transitions into inviting sweetness reminiscent of cinnamon rolls paired with melted caramel icing. The finish is long and lingering, exhaling warm, robust gingerbread spices and captivating toasted wood aromas. This release features an average alcohol content of 109.1 proof (54.55% ABV), perfectly showcasing the full-bodied tension of barrel strength.
