Irish Spirits Dominate EU Exports as Market Demand Sees Strong Growth

According to a newly released market research report by the Irish Whiskey Association (IWA), one-third of all spirits exported by the European Union originate from Ireland. Over the past four years, fueled by keen demand for high-quality spirits in emerging markets such as Greece and Italy, total exports of Irish whiskey to the EU recorded a remarkable 21.5% growth. This data was unveiled at an event in Galway during Ireland's presidency of the Council of the European Union, highlighting how the European continent has become an indispensable core growth market for Irish whiskey and specialty spirits.

Among EU member states, Germany currently firmly holds its position as the largest export market for Irish whiskey, closely followed by Poland and France. Beyond established markets, emerging regions have also demonstrated robust potential. Between 2021 and 2025, total export volumes to Greece and Italy surged by 88% and 68% respectively, while Bulgaria recorded a significant growth of over 50% in export value, reflecting the continuous rise in appreciation and recognition of Irish whiskey among European consumers.

In terms of product category structure, whiskey currently accounts for approximately 45% of total Irish spirits exports, with other categories experiencing synchronized growth. For instance, Irish cream liqueur performed exceptionally well in the French and German markets, registering year-on-year double-digit growth of 32% and 19% in export volumes respectively. Although data from Bord Bia indicates that overall whiskey exports dipped slightly by 5% in 2025 due to challenges in the US market, the steady upward trajectory of the European market has effectively sustained the broader industry.

IWA Director Eoin Ó Catháin noted that European consumer drinking habits regarding premium spirits are continuing to evolve, calling on governments and the EU to further strengthen single market policies. As Ireland holds the presidency of the Council of the EU through the end of 2026, the IWA and Drinks Ireland will focus on promoting Geographical Indication (GI) protections and regulatory revisions for Irish whiskey, Irish cream, and poitín. The event also showcased brands such as Clonakilty, Dingle, Powers, and Five Farms Irish Cream, comprehensively presenting the exceptional quality and profound cultural strength of Irish craft spirits to EU dignitaries.
