New Indian Whisky Rules: IMWA Launches Single Malt Mark

A New Era of Integrity: Establishing Industry Standards and Credibility for Indian Single Malt

The New Delhi-based Indian Malt Whisky Association (IMWA) has officially announced the launch of a new certification system, designed to create a formal industry framework for Indian single malt whisky, which is seeing surging international interest and domestic demand. This initiative will use a secure hologram to help consumers identify authentic Indian Single Malt that meets rigorous quality standards, establishing credibility in a fast-growing and competitive market.

Strict Production Requirements and Technical Specifications

To obtain the IMWA certification mark, products must satisfy several strict conditions: they must be made from 100% malted barley and distilled in copper pot stills at a single distillery. Furthermore, the spirit must be matured for at least three years in oak casks with a capacity not exceeding 700 liters. The association further mandates that all production stages, including bottling, must take place within India, strictly prohibiting the addition of molasses, neutral spirits, or any "external flavorings" to ensure the purity of every drop.

Rajesh Chopra, Secretary General of the IMWA, stated that as the Indian single malt category expands globally and domestically, establishing a credible peer-verification mechanism is vital. This certification mark is not just about compliance, but about setting a benchmark for authenticity and process integrity, reducing confusion in a fragmented market. These standards reference Scotch Whisky Association regulations while also accounting for India's unique terroir and extreme climate conditions.

Market Rise and Future Growth Potential

India is currently the world's fastest-growing major spirits market, with domestic sales reaching 440 million cases by 2025. While blended whiskies and Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) still dominate sales, the growth potential for single malt is staggering. As Indian spirits exports showed double-digit growth in 2024 since 2022, the IMWA hopes this verification mechanism will ensure industry growth is built on verifiable standards rather than just market perception.
