全球首項八大洲威士忌熟成研究:探索氣候如何塑造單一麥芽風味 | New Scientific Study Analyzes How Whisky Matures In Different Continents

World's First 8-Continent Whisky Aging Study

From the Poles to Tropical India: How Global Climate Shapes Whisky Aging

This is a first-of-its-kind scientific study designed to explore how the unique climates of different continents shape the maturation process, chemical composition, and flavor profile of single malt whisky. Led by renowned Brazilian food scientist Dr. Aline Bortoletto and her INOVBEV team in São Paulo, the study analyzes 8 single malt whiskies from all eight continents. The highlight is undoubtedly Isla Marambio, the world's first whisky aged in Antarctica. Produced by the Argentinian distillery La Alazana, this spirit matured for three years at Marambio Base in extreme temperatures as low as -35°C.

A Scientific Arena for "World Whisky"

This research reflects the booming "World Whisky" market. Representing Europe is the Penderyn distillery from Wales, rather than traditional Scotland. Utilizing its unique Faraday copper pot still and the craftsmanship of Master Blender Aista Phillips, Penderyn competes alongside Union Distillery from Brazil, Shelter Point from Canada, Boplaas from South Africa, Rampur from India, Lawrenny from Tasmania, and Pokeno from New Zealand. Notably, the study also includes samples from Zealandia, the eighth continent mostly submerged underwater.

Samples were sourced from "The 8 Continent Series," curated by Daniel Monk, founder of Cask World. During the six-month experiment, the team will use Gas Chromatography combined with a professional sensory panel to create precise chemical and sensory profiles for each whisky. Dr. Bortoletto noted that from the heat of Northern India to the polar cold, this study explores uncharted territory in whisky science.

Monk emphasized that if producers can more accurately understand climate's impact on maturation, it will help optimize production and achieve energy-saving goals. This international scientific report is expected to be presented at major conferences, revealing the mysteries of how climate shapes spirit flavor.
