Glenfarclas unveils its oldest 70-year-old single malt whisky to date
Glenfarclas, one of Scotland’s few remaining family-owned distilleries, has unveiled its oldest single malt whisky to date—a 70-year-old expression. This rare spirit was distilled on November 20, 1953, using traditional hand-turned malt and matured entirely in first-fill sherry casks at the distillery’s dunnage warehouses in Speyside. Limited to just 262 bottles globally, it will be available through select retailers in 50 markets.
The distillery emphasizes that this release represents the pinnacle of its history, showcasing over seven decades of craftsmanship. It is also one of the few surviving spirits from that era. Staying true to Glenfarclas’s understated style, the bottle features classic red packaging, with the family stating the design lets the whisky speak for itself.
Fifth-generation chairman John Grant described opening this milestone cask as a true historic moment, proudly noting the distillery’s commitment to maintaining full control over production, including its rare use of direct-fire distillation to create a rich, full-bodied style. He and distillery manager Callum Fraser decided to release this treasure with deep reverence for its history.
Manager Fraser called this expression the perfect embodiment of Glenfarclas’s soul, highlighting the distillery’s unwavering craftsmanship over 70 years. He emotionally reflected on how this whisky has endured wars, the reigns of queens and kings, and global changes while maintaining exceptional quality, calling it an eternal testament to patience and skill.
Tasting notes reveal a 70-year-old whisky with stewed fruit flavors and subtle Speyside peat, unfolding layers of dark chocolate, spiced dried fruit, molasses toffee, and dark-roasted coffee, culminating in a long, complex, and unforgettable finish.
