Glen Scotia Unveils 'Legend of Campbeltown' Chapter Three; The Weaver Myth
Glen Scotia has unveiled the third limited edition bottling in its annual 'Icons of Campbeltown' series, a 12-year-old single malt Scotch whisky finished in Tawny Port casks. This expression draws inspiration from the mythical figure of the 'Wulver' in Scottish folklore, a legendary creature depicted as a human with a wolf's head, renowned for its benevolent nature.
This single malt whisky is bottled at 51.7% ABV. It is the latest release in Glen Scotia's five-part series commemorating mythical figures carved into Campbeltown's 14th-century market cross. This unpeated single malt was initially matured in bourbon casks before spending nine months in Tawny Port casks for finishing.
According to official tasting notes, the whisky offers an aroma of alluring forest berries, candied nuts, and crisp red apples, complemented by a caramel sweetness. The palate is complex, revealing notes of dried fig, orange peel, and smooth praline. The finish is rich with cocoa and dried fruit flavors, intertwined with hints of vanilla and oak spice.
Glen Scotia's Master Distiller, Ashley Smith, stated that they drew inspiration from the carvings on the market cross to complement the mythical figure, aiming to craft a unique 12-year-old expression using premium Tawny Port casks.
The legend of the 'Wulver' tells of a wolf-headed human who lived in a hillside cave, fishing daily and secretly leaving his catch on the windowsills of his less fortunate neighbors by night, embodying the generous and selfless spirit of Campbeltown's bygone era when it boasted 34 distilleries, with only three remaining today.
Since 1832, Glen Scotia has been dedicated to crafting exceptional whiskies. For this release, the distillery collaborated once again with artist John Holtzman, known for his work with Disney and Marvel, to bring these legendary figures to life through exquisite label art.
The newly released Icons of Campbeltown Release No.3 is now exclusively available through the Glen Scotia website, the distillery's visitor center in Campbeltown, and Fortnum & Mason in London. The previous two releases in the series were inspired by a mermaid and a dragon, respectively.
