Global spirits giant Diageo recently proposed a significant operational adjustment, planning to close the Clynelish Distillery visitor centre in Brora, Scotland. Although visitor services may cease, Diageo confirmed that whisky production at Clynelish Distillery will continue as normal and will not be affected. A Diageo spokesperson mentioned in a statement that following a recent review of its visitor centre operations, they have regrettably proposed this closure. The company is currently engaging with affected employees and providing necessary support. This potential closure comes against a backdrop of a broader decline in the premium Scotch whisky market, including global economic pressures and challenges posed by US tariffs on exports. Recently, other prominent distilleries like Glenglassaugh, InchDairnie, and Rosebank have also experienced varying degrees of operational difficulties and initiated restructuring plans.

Despite Diageo investing significant resources into distillery tourism experiences across Scotland over the past few years—from which Clynelish Distillery benefited with new interactive exhibits and a terrace bar—the proposed closure has sparked concern. Lib Dem MP Jamie Stone (Caithness, Sutherland, and Easter Ross) stated on X that the news is "deeply disappointing," emphasizing that such facilities are vital to the Far North tourism chain. Stone is seeking a meeting with Diageo to discuss the proposal and reflect the local community's concerns.
