2025 UK Whisky Exports Fall; Gin Becomes New Growth Highlight
Global Trade Environment Harsh: UK Whisky Exports Face Challenges While Gin Shows Strength
According to the latest report from the Food and Drink Federation (FDF), UK food and drink exports reached record highs in 2025. However, whisky, the leading export category, showed signs of fatigue. While whisky remains the UK's highest-value export, its export value and volume decreased by 0.8% and 4.3% respectively. The FDF noted that although the total export value rose, actual volumes still lag behind pre-Brexit levels, indicating a challenging global trade environment.

Gin Trends Upward, US Market Affected by Tariff Fluctuations
In contrast to whisky, gin performed brilliantly in 2025, ranking tenth on the export list. Its export volume grew slightly by 0.3%, while its value recorded a double-digit increase of 13.7%. Regarding major markets, Ireland remained the UK's largest export destination. Notably, the US market performance declined in the second half of the year due to trade barriers and tariff fluctuations. Meanwhile, Europe remains the UK's most vital partner, with whisky maintaining leadership in regions like Europe and Uruguay, reflecting stable demand across different territories.

Huge Potential in India, High Expectations for FTA
The report also highlighted the India market, where export value grew by over 10%. The UK-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA), signed in July 2025 and expected to take effect in 2026, will bring significant opportunities for the industry. FDF Chief Executive Karen Betts reminded that facing rising costs and geopolitical conflicts, the government should strengthen support for exporters to help them establish a stable global presence and overcome the struggle of export volumes not yet returning to pre-Brexit levels.
